Trail Overview

Enjoy a refreshing, low-stress "blast" across the Great Basin floor. This route serves as an efficient and comfortable link between the inland Saulsbury Road track and the primary Missile Base Access Road (Route 44). If you are looking for a break from the technical rock-crawling of the mountains, this is the perfect trail to enjoy the scenery and relax a little. The road surface is unique to the area, consisting of a soft, almost spongy, sandy material that absorbs vibrations, making for an exceptionally smooth ride. The true draw of this cutover is the sense of absolute scale. Because the terrain is remarkably flat and straight, you are treated to unobstructed, 360-degree vistas that stretch for dozens of miles in every direction. The landscape is a pristine sea of low-growing sagebrush and desert scrub, providing a front-row seat to the "Basin and Range" topography that defines the Silver State. Keep your eyes on the horizon; this open terrain is a favorite corridor for Pronghorn Antelope, which can often be seen in the distance as they navigate between the nearby mountain ranges. This route receives no winter maintenance. While generally flat, drifting snow can obscure the track and make navigation difficult in the colder months. Expect virtually no usable cell service. While you may see one bar on your device, the data speeds are nonexistent. Download offline maps

Difficulty

Suitable for almost all high-clearance vehicles and SUVs. The soft sand surface is manageable for most standard crossover vehicles in dry conditions. Rated a 2 primarily because the road is a narrow single track with virtually no established turnouts. One vehicle may need to reverse a considerable distance to find a safe passing spot.
