Trail Overview
Mormon Mesa Southwest Rim offers a rugged adventure along the lower side of the rim, traversing the western edge. This trail winds intermittently close to the rim, providing stunning landscape views, though it is a rocky trek to the end. If you're looking for a place to camp along the side of the rim, there are plenty of early spots available for a convenient and scenic overnight stay without beating yourself up with the rough trail. As you reach the trail's midsection, you will find yourself positioned almost right above the white-painted "M" on the mountains above Moapa Valley, a notable landmark worth a stop. To the west, you're treated to breathtaking views of the Valley of Fire and the Muddy River Valley, making this trail a feast for the eyes. This route is composed primarily of rocks and boulders, most about the size of doll heads, requiring careful navigation as you progress. Airing down your tires is highly recommended for added comfort over the rocky terrain. At the southernmost tip of the trail, you'll be rewarded with incredible vistas overlooking the Muddy River Valley, the Lake Mead Recreation Area way off in the distance, and the confluence with the Virgin River to the east. Important Note: This area is located within a critical habitat for the desert tortoise, an endangered species. While exploring, be sure to respect the environment and avoid disturbing any wildlife you may encounter. Plenty of cell service is available along the trail, with three bars of LTE, making it easy to stay connected during your adventure.
