Trail Overview
Saulsbury Road is an engaging dirt track that provides a front-row seat to the massive geological scale of the Saulsbury Wash. This trail is a study in contrasting terrains; it zig-zags along the edge of the wash, offering a physically active driving experience. The northern half of the route is the more technical "gatekeeper," characterized by numerous wash crossings and eroded, "dug-up" segments where seasonal rains have carved deep ruts into the track. As you push south, the trail undergoes a dramatic transformation. Approximately halfway through, the technical ruts vanish, replaced by a smooth, soft, and fast-running surface. The soil here has a unique, almost sand-like texture that provides a distinct "floating" sensation while driving, a refreshing break from the jarring rocks of the northern end. The landscape is pure Nevada: a wide-open expanse of silver sagebrush where you are highly likely to spot Pronghorn Antelope. While no established campsites were noted, the sheer beauty and varied driving dynamics make this an excellent choice for those looking to experience the raw character of the high desert. This is active cattle country. Please yield the right-of-way to all livestock and maintain a steady, moderate pace to avoid sudden encounters with animals in the brush. Expect zero cell service for the duration of this trail. The vastness of the basin floor puts you well outside the reach of any local towers. Difficulty
Rated a 3 specifically for the northern half of the trail. Drivers will encounter several technical wash crossings and deep, eroded ruts that require high clearance and careful throttle control. These sections can become significantly more difficult or impassable immediately after heavy rain.
History
The "Saulsbury" name is a pillar of 19th-century pioneer history in the Tonopah region. The Saulsburys were legendary road-builders and station keepers who provided the essential infrastructure needed to move freight and passengers across these daunting basins. This road parallels a natural wash that has served as a travel corridor for centuries.
