Trail Overview
Summit Creek is a quintessential Nevada adventure, serving as a primary corridor into the heart of a long-abandoned mining district. The route begins at the valley floor with a super-wide, inviting road that provides easy access to the lower mine sites. However, as the trail ascends into the canyon, the environment shifts dramatically. The track narrows into an intimate two-track that winds through a dense canopy of trees and crosses the small, seasonal creek several times. The highlight of this route is the incredible Buckeye Mine area. Here, the "ghosts" of Nevada's industrial past are vivid. A keen eye can still find the aerial cable bucket system partially intact, along with various weathered wooden structures and mining foundations tucked into the hillsides. As the trail climbs higher, the scenery becomes more rugged, offering spectacular views of the canyon walls. Be advised that the upper reaches of this trail are extremely narrow and heavily overgrown. Paint damage is a certainty in these sections, and manual tree clearing may be required to reach the final terminus. Full-size vehicles are not recommended for the upper sections of this trail. The narrow width and low-hanging branches are best suited for smaller, more nimble vehicles such as Jeeps, mid-size trucks, dirt bikes, or ATVs. Expect no cell service once you enter the folds of Summit Creek Canyon. The high ridges and dense timber block all signals. Download offline maps before leaving the Highway 376 corridor. The Buckeye Mine area contains numerous unstable wooden structures and potential hidden shafts. "Stay Out, Stay Alive." Do not enter any buildings or mine openings.

Difficulty
Rated a 3 due to several short but steep climbs out of the water crossings and sustained, loose rocky sections along the higher shelf roads. Severe paint damage is guaranteed as you head further up the canyon.
History
The Buckeye Mine at Summit Creek was a significant operation in the mid-20th century, particularly known for its uranium and silver prospects. The aerial cable bucket system you see today is a remarkable relic of 1950s engineering, designed to transport ore down steep, inaccessible slopes that even the most rugged trucks couldn't navigate. This canyon represents the evolution of the Reese River Mining District, showing how modern technology allowed miners to reach the "high-altitude riches" that their 1860s predecessors could only dream of.
