Trail Overview

This trail offers a captivating journey through shifting landscapes, beginning as a straight shot across the desert plains before transitioning into a more intimate driving experience. The route twists and turns through scenic groves of Utah Juniper and Pinyon Pine, providing a shaded canopy that feels worlds away from the open valley. As you crest the hilltop, the forest opens to reveal an amazing wide-angle view of the surrounding mountain ranges, then the trail descends back into another dense pocket of timber. The trail terminates at a dramatic vantage point on a hilltop, offering expansive views to the northeast. While the trail bears the name of the local spring, the original motorized access spur (43227A) has been reclaimed by nature and is no longer passable by vehicle. To reach the actual source of Box Spring, you must park at the designated turnaround and continue the final stretch on foot. This area is a hotspot for wildlife; keep a sharp eye out for herds of wild horses that frequently roam these hills, Sage Grouse in the brush, and Red-tailed Hawks circling the thermals above. The groves of Juniper and Pine offer several small pull-outs that provide excellent natural protection from the relentless Great Basin winds--ideal for those seeking a sheltered campsite. There is no cell service on this trail. The rolling hills and remote location block all signals. Download offline maps before leaving the Austin area.

Difficulty

While the trail is rated an easy 2, it becomes quite narrow as it weaves through the trees. Oversized vehicles and large campers are not recommended, as there is limited room for maneuvering, and low-hanging branches may cause damage. The route is generally easy but becomes slightly rocky and uneven near the final hilltop lookout.

History

Named for the "boxed" timber structures often built by early pioneers to protect rare water sources, Box Spring was a vital waypoint for 1800s ranchers and travelers. In the high desert, water is more valuable than silver, and springs like this one allowed for the survival of the livestock that supported the Austin mining boom. Today, the area remains largely unchanged from that era, serving as a sanctuary for wild horses whose ancestors likely drank from these same waters alongside the stagecoach teams of the 1860s.
