Trail Overview

This scenic trail is the main route through the Chicken Park trail system. The trail passes through a mix of pine and aspen forest within open meadows and rock formations. Some rock formations are 100's of feet tall. The trail passes by multiple dispersed campsites and spur trails. The trail ends at the Creadmore Lakes, which has multiple dispersed campsites along its shoreline and up in the nearby hills. The trail is typically one vehicle wide, with occasional grassy pull-offs that allow for passing. OHVs are permitted on this route. The trail has a seasonal closure from November 30th to June 15th, although dates may vary based on conditions. Both entrances to the Chicken Park trail system are gated with a sign indicating the gates will be closed on December 8th for the 2025 season.

Difficulty

Drivers can expect occasional embedded rocks in the 2 to 6 inch range, moderate grades, and standing water up to 12 inches deep in wetter seasons. The trail is very rutted at its eastern end, and there is a muddy standing water section over 100 feet long midway along the trail that requires thoughtful driving to maintain momentum. When muddy, the trail surface becomes rutted in areas. There is also one short off-camper uphill section that's sandy and rutted. All the obstacles have some type of bypass, although drivers should stay on the trail. There are also a few areas where protruding or overhanging branches may make contact with vehicles.
