Trail Overview
1099 is a 6-mile-long trail that is mostly in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, with a half-mile portion that enters the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area on the east end. This last half mile in the National Recreation Area is only open to conventional vehicles, OHVs, and street-legal ATVs and dirt bikes. As of April 2024, a permit system for ORV routes within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is being developed, and ORV permits will be required in the future. Starting from the west end, the road has some sections of deeper sand, which adds to the difficulty. It dumps into a big wide sand wash made of fine red sand. It's especially deeper in the corners. The wash has fun curves and is smooth for the most part with hardly any rocks until it comes upon a couple of sections with rock slab layers and boulders in the wash. Most vehicles can go around the boulders. It crosses the intersection with 1043 in the wash, which takes you south to the Lees Ferry Overlook and is a highlight of the area. After this intersection, there are more layers of rock in the wash that you go up and down. There are taller sections of rock, but they are ramped, and there is a way around the rock. The trail is really scenic the whole way, going past cool rock formations that look like beehives and scenic sandstone cliffs. There are two caves to check out on the east side of the intersection with 1043. Look out for a huge cave on the north side, and a smaller one on the south side of the trail.

This is an intermediate dirt road due to sections of deeper sand and slab rock ledges over a foot tall.
