Trail Overview

Thorn Trail is a mixed gravel and dirt route that offers a scenic and slightly more engaging drive for those exploring the area. The surface varies between compacted gravel and dirt, with sections that can become soft depending on recent weather. A large open expanse along the trail provides an excellent setting for vehicle photography, with wide views and ample space to position safely off the main travel path. The route narrows in several places, requiring attention to oncoming traffic and careful line choice when navigating tighter sections. A large mud hole sits just off the main trail, along with deep runoff holes that can collect water after storms. While these features may be avoidable, they add to the terrain variability. After rainfall, the trail can become muddy and soupy, significantly changing traction conditions. During the winter months, restroom access in the area is limited, with facilities generally only available within the RV Campground. Drivers should remain on the designated trail and use caution in wet conditions to prevent unnecessary trail damage.

Difficulty

Thorn Trail is rated a 2 due to its uneven gravel and dirt surface, potential for mud, and the presence of runoff holes that can create small obstacles. While the main route does not feature sustained large ledges or deep ruts, traction can vary significantly after rain, particularly in muddy sections. The large mud hole located just off the trail and the deeper runoff holes increase terrain variability, but do not define the sustained driving experience when avoidable. Overall, the route aligns with a dirt or rocky road where shallow obstacles and variable surface conditions may be encountered, making it suitable for most 4WD and high-clearance 2WD vehicles in dry conditions, with increased caution advised after rainfall.
