Trail Overview
The First Creek 4X4 Loop is a compact but technical route suited for experienced drivers looking for rugged 4x4 trails near Cle Elum in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. The loop begins on Crystal Ridge Trail #4W319 near the Robinson Gulch #1357 junction and heads south onto Tuff Ridge #4W329 before dropping into the tighter forest terrain of the First Creek trail system. Over roughly 6.3 miles, the route gains and loses about 2,000 feet as it transitions between narrow ridgelines and dense Cascade forest. Trail surfaces include exposed dirt, loose rock, embedded ledges, and occasional erosion ruts, with traction varying depending on seasonal moisture. Steep climbs, off-camber sections, and narrow shelf segments make high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles the most appropriate choice. From Tuff Ridge the route connects to First Creek Jeep Trail #4W318, where tight tree corridors and uneven forest dirt continue the moderate-to-difficult character typical of Washington Jeep trails in the Cle Elum Ranger District. The loop returns via Skippers Trail #4W337, also known as Meadow Trail, before climbing back to Crystal Ridge to complete the circuit. Early season travel may include lingering snow, downed trees, and muddy conditions during spring melt, while late summer generally provides the most stable surfaces. The trail system is designated as 4W motorized routes on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest MVUM and is open to high-clearance 4x4 vehicles, UTVs, ATVs, and dirt bikes.
