Trail Overview
Two Ocean Basin (FS Road 30010) is a solid choice for experienced drivers looking for a remote, moderate route through the Bridger-Teton backcountry, with a focus on navigation and changing surface conditions rather than technical rock work. Accessed from US-26 in the Blackrock Ranger District, this forest road runs through a broad basin environment with primarily native dirt surfaces, broken up by stretches of loose rock and drainage crossings that can turn soft or rutted depending on moisture. The route is open to full-width 4x4 vehicles, including trucks and SUVs, as well as SxS, ATVs, and dirt bikes per MVUM designations, making it a versatile option for mixed-use exploration. Expect gradual elevation changes rather than steep climbs, but don't underestimate the impact of weather; spring runoff and recent storms can quickly degrade traction and create muddy sections that increase difficulty. Navigation is one of the main challenges on FS 30010, as multiple junctions and spur routes branch off into the basin and surrounding terrain, requiring a current MVUM or reliable GPS track to stay on designated roads. The route remains largely unmaintained, so erosion, washouts, and inconsistent road width are common. Seasonal access typically opens in July and closes with fall snowfall, though timing varies based on snowpack and road conditions. The area is remote with no cell service, and wildlife activity is common, so situational awareness is critical. Dispersed camping is permitted along the route in compliance with Forest Service regulations, offering access to quiet backcountry sites, while nearby non-motorized trails and short OHV spurs provide additional exploration opportunities within the basin.
