Trail Overview
Green Knob is a slow-moving, highly technical trail that demands focus from start to finish. While the primary surface is gravel, the route is extremely rocky with constant obstacles that prevent maintaining any real speed. The trail is very tight, with heavy overgrowth and closely spaced trees that will result in pinstriping and light body contact in many areas. Fallen trees and low-hanging vegetation further restrict the corridor, requiring careful navigation throughout. The terrain is consistently challenging, featuring steep climbs and descents, tight turns, and numerous off-camber and shelf road sections. Early in the trail, steep grades reach approximately 15 degrees, with sections later in the route approaching 18-degree climbs, descents, and side slopes. Drivers will encounter a mix of sand, mud holes, ruts, and extended rocky ledge sections that require deliberate line choice and controlled throttle input. Passing opportunities are extremely limited to nonexistent, and there are no viable turnaround points once committed to the trail. This is an out-and-back route, and drivers should not proceed past the designated endpoint, as there is no room to safely turn around beyond it. Due to the tight conditions, overgrowth, and sustained obstacles, vehicle contact and trail wear are likely. This trail should only be attempted by experienced drivers prepared for a slow, technical drive and potential vehicle impact.

Difficulty
Green Knob is rated a 4 due to its sustained uneven, rutted terrain combined with loose rock, mud, erosion, and off-camber sections that require consistent driver input. The trail includes multiple extended ledge sections, steep grades exceeding 15 degrees, and side slopes approaching 18 degrees, all of which contribute to the overall difficulty. Unlike a Level 3 trail, where obstacles may be intermittent, Green Knob presents continuous technical features, including rock obstacles, ruts, mud holes, and shelf road exposure with very limited room for error. The tight, overgrown corridor further increases difficulty by restricting vehicle placement and eliminating passing or recovery space. The lack of turnaround points means drivers must be prepared to complete the trail once started. The combination of steep grades, off-camber terrain, rock exposure, and limited maneuverability elevates this trail into a Level 4 rating. High-clearance 4WD vehicles are required, and drivers should be prepared for potential vehicle contact and mechanical strain, as evidenced by increased tire wear and risk of damage during the drive.
