White Stallion

Trail Overview

White Stallion is an easy trail that takes you from Sleeping Child Road to North Fork Rye and eventually to Rye Creed Road south of Darby, Montana. The first section from Sleeping Child, where you are climbing at a pretty good rate, is the roughest part of this entire trail. It is just a little bit more rocky than the rest of the trail. After the first climb, the trail stays pretty level for a while and is very smooth driving. Although you gain elevation pretty quickly in the first section, the trail never gets very steep. The only reason this trail is a 2 difficulty rather than a 1, is that most of the trail is only one vehicle wide, and there are some pretty good ledges at times. There are some good pullouts along the way, however. This trail is mostly a gravel surface and has very little potholes and ruts. There are some great views of the Bitterroot and Sapphire mountains along this trail. Phone service is spotty on this trail.

Difficulty

The trail is mostly one vehicle wide with significant ledges in spots. Otherwise, there aren't any obstacles, or water crossings. This trail is not maintained in the winter, so it will be impassable by most wheeled vehicles in the winter.
