Trail Overview
Montana is "Big Sky Country," and driving this road makes that phrase meaningful and personal. This road, labeled FS 8261, travels along a broad open ridge at an elevation of about 8,000 feet. The 360-degree panoramic views are magnificent and make one feel really small. A speck on a huge canvas of color, texture, and shape. This is a high-elevation road suitable for high-clearance 4x4 vehicles. The tread is a wide single lane track in most places. There are a few moderately steep ascents and descents that may require the use of 4WD and the application of rut straddling skills. There will be several gates to pass through. It is important that travelers close these gates behind them to facilitate managing the cattle grazing in these pastures. Towards the southern end of this road, there is a bench made entirely of horseshoes as a memorial to a young cowboy.

History
The horseshoe bench at the southern end of this road is a memorial to Jace Weeks, age 24, who died in 2023. Jace was a personable young cowboy who had a passion for the Big Sky Country. It seems appropriate that his memorial is placed out in the middle of nowhere under the Big Sky.
