Trail Overview
The Trout Valley trail encompasses a total of 9 miles of trail in southeastern Minnesota within the Richard J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood State Forest. The primary trail is a one-way trail running counterclockwise. The trail from the parking area forms a small loop, which is bidirectional and leads to the main loop. The trail climbs to the top of a steep, wooded ridge where two overlooks offer great views of the surrounding Trout, Whitewater, and Mississippi River valleys. The trail is considered a mostly easy trail with a few moderately challenging sections (mainly the rocky hill climbs). The trail is a mix of hard pack and gravel sections with minor elevation changes. This is a multi-use trail and managed for ATV, OHM, mountain bike, and horseback riding, and is considered day use only (no camping). Please use caution when riding. This trail is provided and maintained by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The trail can be accessed via County Road 29. Parking is available at the trailhead. Both Class 1 (50" or less) and Class 2 (50-65") ATVs are allowed, as well as Off-highway Motorcycles (OHM) on the Trout Valley trail. The trail consists mostly of dirt dual track with embedded rocks. Expect lots of water and mud in the May/June timeframe and dust, and dry trails in the early fall before seasonal rains begin. Right after the beginning of the trail, there is a series of erosion steps as you ascend the trail. These can create nice little jumps. The trail is normally open from 1 May to 31 October for wheeled off-roading. This trail is maintained by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. OHV riding in Minnesota requires either a vehicle registered with the state or the purchase of a non-resident OHV state trail pass. Nearest services are located in Kellogg.
