Trail Overview

This trail follows a narrow, partially cleared two-track made up of gravel, with plenty of rocks and bumps along the way. It winds through an attractive forest, with several ascents and descents, and includes some muddy sections that may require careful driving depending on conditions. The trail leads through a mix of pines and dense undergrowth, and eventually reaches a small parking area near the river. Despite its remote feel, this area is a popular destination with local visitors, as the parking lot was full on a Monday. Drivers should be aware of local traffic, especially on weekends or holidays. The forest near the end of the trail is particularly scenic, with a mix of ferns and pines that gives the area the appearance of a botanical garden. While the parking area might otherwise seem like a good spot for dispersed camping, its popularity makes it less suitable for an overnight stay. The trail itself does not offer any formal or dispersed campsites and lacks basic amenities such as trash bins, water sources, or restrooms. Cell service may be limited or unavailable along much of the route.

History

The Snake Creek Winter Trail in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness follows an old 1960s logging road to a former camp, crossing a sturdy bridge before narrowing into a rugged path beside the creek. Travelers encounter young birch forests, grassy landings, and rougher terrain with roots, boulders, and wet patches, giving the route a distinctly wild character.
