Red Hills East

Trail Overview

This trail is generally mild and suitable for most 4WD vehicles, including those with minimal modifications. The terrain consists mainly of a dirt base, with some light elevation changes throughout the route. One notable feature is a larger mud puddle, almost like a small pond, that crosses the trail. While the water crossing may appear intimidating, it typically has a solid and stable bottom, allowing vehicles to pass through with relative ease. However, drivers should still use caution and evaluate the depth during or after rainfall. The trail also includes a few small hills, none of which are particularly steep or technical. It's a good trail for newer drivers or those seeking a relaxed ride.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
