Trail Overview
This trail is a well-maintained gravel route that winds through a dense forest landscape, with occasional climbs and descents. It's a fairly long trail and sees a moderate amount of traffic, including recreational users and local residents. The forested surroundings are scenic, and there are a couple of homes scattered along the way. A number of side trails branch off the main route, though many are blocked by piles of soil or rocks, overgrown, or lead onto private property and are not suitable for public access. The trail crosses a creek and continues over a bridge and railway line before intersecting with the Taconite Trail, which is reserved exclusively for snowmobiles. There's also access to the Big Aspen hiking trail from this route. The adjacent Big Aspen Trail allows ATVs, dirt bikes, UTVs, and e-bikes during the designated motorized season, which runs from May 1 to November 20. Larger vehicles like Jeeps and trucks are not permitted. Along this trail, there are two campsites--Pfiefer and Big Rice Lake. While both offer fire rings, tent pads, benches, and vault toilets, they do not have drinking water, electricity, or showers. Trash disposal is available but not prominently marked. Despite the remoteness, there is 4G LTE cell coverage in the area.
