Trail Overview

This trail features a primarily dirt base with scattered rocks along the way, offering a smooth but slightly varied ride through a wooded section of the park. As you wind your way through the trees, the trail provides a scenic and shaded route with just enough terrain change to keep things interesting. At one point, the trail splits into two separate paths, allowing for a short detour before looping back into a single route again. Expect to encounter a few mud puddles, especially after rain, as well as some tight turns that may require careful navigation. Due to some light overgrowth in spots, pinstriping is possible for wider vehicles, so proceed with caution if you're concerned about your rig's paint. It's an easy-to-moderate trail with a mix of nature, light challenge, and flow.

This is an easy trail with a narrow, single-vehicle width throughout, requiring steady focus when navigating through tight areas. The base is mostly dirt with a few scattered rocks and occasional shallow mud puddles, especially after rain. While there are no major obstacles, the tighter turns and overgrown vegetation can pose a challenge for wider vehicles, pinstriping is likely in spots. Overall, it's a peaceful but focused drive, great for exploring without taking on anything too technical.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
