Trail Overview

This scenic trail runs above Split Personality and climbs steadily along a narrow shelf road carved into the hillside, note this is a one way directional trail. As you ascend, you'll encounter a tight switchback that may require a three-point turn, especially for longer or full-size rigs. Use caution and take your time, this is not a place to rush. The views from this trail are stunning and will make you feel like you've been transported out of Minnesota and into the San Juan Mountain of Colorado. While there are no major rock obstacles or deep ruts along the way, the narrow width and steep drop-offs make it important to stay alert and maintain control.Due to the nature of this trail it is possible to see land slides on it at times making it impassable.

Difficulty

A narrow shelf road with no major obstacles but high exposure. One tight switchback may need a three-point turn. No room for error along the edge, so careful driving is key. Suitable for most 4WD vehicles in dry conditions. Confidence and focus matter more than clearance or tires here

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
