Trail Overview

This trail forms a large loop and is primarily well-maintained gravel. Its width varies between sections that are two vehicles wide and narrower stretches that allow only a single vehicle. The main route is identified as Route 77, though parts of it are known by other names, as signposted on the roads. The surrounding landscape is a mix of farmland and open fields, with sandy patches where the gravel can become slippery, so care is needed in those areas. Toward the final section of the loop, there are drainage ditches alongside the road. The route is generally scenic, with signs of past logging activity, and it passes through areas where local traffic is possible. There are also some residences along the trail, and deer may be encountered, particularly near the fields. The trail does not have formal campsites and lacks amenities such as trash disposal and a water supply, and cell service may be limited.

History

Beltrami Island State Forest, established in 1933 and named for explorer Giacomo Beltrami, is Minnesota's second-largest state forest. Originally inhabited by the Ojibwe and later controlled by French, British, and American interests, much of the forest was replanted by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The eastern side features multi-use trails for hiking, horseback riding, ATVs, and snowmobiling, along with camping, paddling, and birding.
