Trail Overview

This trail winds through an area filled with optional hill climbs, giving drivers the chance to pick lines based on their rig's capability and confidence level. Along the way, you'll encounter several large mud holes--some of which have soft, soupy bottoms that can make traction difficult or lead to a stuck rig. Proceed with caution, especially after rainfall, when these holes can deepen. There are also some moderate hill climbs scattered along the route with embedded rocks up to 8 inches tall. While not overly technical, careful tire placement and momentum are important for maintaining control

Difficulty

This trail offers several optional hill climbs and passes a few large, soft-bottomed mud holes; caution is advised. Some hills include embedded rocks up to 8 inches tall, which may affect traction, especially when wet. While the route has its challenges, most high clearance 4WD vehicles should handle it fine with careful driving and smart line choice.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
