Trail Overview

This trail serves as a connector between Whiteface Reservoir, Long Lake, and Lake Section 14. It begins off Highway 4, also known as Vermilion Trail, and follows a mostly straight route with some gentle winding sections. The surface is well-maintained gravel, making for a relatively smooth drive. The trail passes by a few private residences, so it's important to keep speeds down and remain aware of local traffic. Along the way, there are a few side trails that branch off from the main route. These may be worth exploring, although their condition can vary, and not all are suitable for all vehicle types. The surrounding area is primarily forested, with occasional clearings. Although scenic, there are no designated or dispersed campsites located directly along this trail. Services are not available, so travelers should come prepared with all necessary items. There is no trash disposal, potable water, or restroom access, and cell phone reception may be weak or unavailable depending on your location.

History

Superior National Forest was established in 1909 by President Theodore Roosevelt to protect the region's watersheds and natural resources after years of heavy logging and mining. The area has long been home to the Ojibwe people, who continue to maintain cultural ties to the land. In 1978, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness within the forest was given added protection, making it one of the most visited wilderness areas in the U.S. today.
