Trail Overview

This trail is a dedicated rock garden and offers a challenging experience right from the start. One end will have some mud puddles after rainfall which could make traction challenging. Once in the loop, there are rock obstacles up to 3 feet tall that require careful tire placement, good ground clearance, and a steady throttle to climb over. Once inside the rock garden loop, the terrain remains technical, and you'll notice a drop in temperature; cold air seeps through the rocks, possibly from long-abandoned mine shafts hidden beneath the surface. The second entrance brings its own test: a steep, muddy hill climb that becomes increasingly slick after rain, making traction control a must. This trail is best suited for modified rigs and experienced drivers.

Difficulty

This trail is challenging. This technical trail begins with large rock obstacles that demand high clearance and careful driving. The main loop is a rugged rock garden with variable traction, and one entry point includes a steep, muddy climb that becomes slick when wet. Unexpected elements, like cold air from potential mine shafts, add a unique twist. Not suitable for stock vehicles; best tackled by well-equipped rigs with experienced drivers.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
