Trail Overview

This trail is packed with elevation changes and offers a series of rolling hills, some of which are fairly steep and will require steady throttle control and good braking on the descent. The terrain is mostly dirt-based with some scattered rocks, and while generally manageable, the challenge increases after recent rainfall. Several sections of the trail become narrow into shelf road-style paths where the margin for error is tight. Drivers will need to stay focused, as one bad line could put them too close to the edge. Despite the tighter spots, the trail rewards you with scenic views of Gill Lake, especially along the shelf road stretches. It's a great trail for those who enjoy a mix of elevation, caution, and natural beauty.

Difficulty

This trail falls into the moderate category, offering a mix of terrain that requires both attention and skill. The frequent hills--some of them fairly steep--demand careful throttle control and awareness, especially on the descent. The narrow shelf road sections add an extra layer of challenge, where precision matters and there's not much room to correct a bad line. While the overall surface isn't highly technical, the combination of elevation changes and tighter sections means it's not a trail to take lightly.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
