Trail Overview

Newby Cemetery Road FS 130, also known as the Gray Truck Trail, is a gravel forest service road through the center-west Kentucky section, Kentucky Lake side, of the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. The Newby Cemetery Road, features an abundance of depth for what could seem like a one-purpose gravel road, but hosts two spur roads, the Watkins Road FS 306 and Kelsie Road FS 308, the North/South hiking trail access, and three cemeteries, the Gray, Higgins, and Newby family cemeteries. The road is well maintained but does have a few points nature has influenced and has changed the drivability, one being the flat low land center section surrounding the Smith Creek, which leads shortly to Smith Bay, the area without doubt has seen its fair share of flooding and is commemorated with a sign warning of such occurrences, the last portion features a few mild steep hills were water has formed some mild erosion and ultimately collects in the valleys, at times forming soft dirt spots where the gravel fades in the roads track. A great road to get familiar with the Land Between the Lakes vibe, of blissful scenic and historic 100-numbered roads, that lead to thrilling 300-numbered roads.

Difficulty

Newby Cemetery Road is a simple gravel road. Generally well maintained, it is given a base rating of 1/10, consisting of mild grades up and down the rolling hills of the area. Expect washboards, potholes, mounding of the gravel, spots where the gravel fades to dirt, and mild signs of erosion on the hills, especially the hills on the far West portion. One conditional game changer is the Smith Creek flood plain, though rare, if this were to flood the road would experience significant to extreme difficulty increases.

History

The Newby Cemetery Road features three cemeteries along its track, from East to West, Isaac Gray, Higgins No. 4, and the Newby Cemetery, with memorials dating from 1799 to the present day. Please pay respect to those who came before us, leave the cemeteries to rest in peace or better off than you found them.
