Trail Overview

Pioneer is a two-mile-long ATV trail that descends west to east from the Elkhorn Trail to 550 Whisky Park Road, descending nearly 800 feet in elevation along the way. The trail is mostly fast and flowy, with smooth dirt, shallow ruts, and only occasional loose rock. Waterbars are present for erosion control, and riders will encounter a few root bands, sticks, and tighter curves as the trail winds downhill. The route passes through a scenic mix of pine and aspen forest, transitioning into open grassy meadows with expansive views over forested hillsides. While a few steeper segments appear throughout the descent, the trail maintains an overall easy character. This trail is closed seasonally from 12/2 to 6/14.

Difficulty

This is an easy trail due to its smooth dirt surface, moderate grade, and minimal technical features. The steeper downhill and scattered roots add some variety without significantly increasing the difficulty.

Access Description

Access the Hahn's Peak Trail System by taking Routt County Road 129 north of Hahn's Peak Village towards Columbine to access the National Forest. The Columbine Parking Lot and the Elkhorn Trailhead South are easy places to park for day use. Some of the popular staging or dispersed camping areas are Little Red Park off Red Park Road (FS 409) or off Whiskey Park Road (FS 550). There are several days' worth of trails here, and it's a very popular spot for dirt bikers and family camping in the summer. Most of the trails don't open until mid-June or July, and there can typically still be snow drifts and uncut logs in early summer. This area has a lot of beetle kill, so downed trees are common. There is no cell service except for on top of some of the peaks.
