Trail Overview
Horse Mesa is a lollipop loop starting down by the Gunnison River off of BLM Rte 629. It starts flat and sandy prior to a pretty long, steep, and straight climb onto the mesa. The climb is only mildly technical but is notably steep with some exposure. Once on the mesa, the next section is pretty rocky, nothing too technical, but consistently very rocky. As the rockiness reduces you come to the split in the trail- the south or clockwise turn-off is not marked or well-traveled and can be easily missed. Ridden in the clockwise direction, you're rewarded with some great views to the south. The circular section of the lollipop is generally very easy and can be ridden in either direction. Don't forget to stop and enjoy the views of the river before descending the steep hill. If riding a dirt bike or ATV this trail is also the start or end to Saddle Up and makes a great loop!
