Trail Overview
This popular high-altitude jeep route begins at Express Creek Road and serves as a gateway to the Taylor Park and Crested Butte backcountry trail systems. Due to its elevation, snow can linger until mid-July. The 5.5-mile trail starts at an elevation of 9,422 feet and ascends to 11,928 feet. Trailhead parking is conveniently located next to the historic Ashcroft ghost town on Express Creek Road. As you embark on the trail, after you crosse the first bridge the trail quickly begins a steep climb with loose rocks underfoot. Be mindful of several private drives within the first mile; stick to the main road. After about 2 miles, you'll encounter a spur to the right; continue on the main route. The ascent becomes steeper, and after another 1.75 miles, you'll face a long, steep incline. Take a moment to admire the stunning views of Castle Peak (14,252 ft) and Conundrum Peak (14,012 ft) behind you. At the summit of Taylor Pass, you'll be rewarded with views of Taylor Lake below, Taylor Park, and the breathtaking Castle Creek Valley surrounded by majestic peaks. From the Pass, you have several options to extend your adventure, including a loop back to Aspen via Richmond Ridge, Crested Butte via Taylor River Road or Star Pass.
