Trail Overview

8600D is a technical desert single track with several rock ledge obstacles. The north end starts on a wide spine of a mesa with a big rock problem right away that is a hill climb with a jagged rock ledge at the top. It has a lot of downhills with loose dirt on top of rock ledges and slab rock. There's often a way to pick an easier line because they are wide trails with wide rock obstacles. It would be much harder to go up these obstacles because it is hard to get traction with all the loose dirt. It weaves in and out of pinyon pine, and at the south end of the trail, it goes into a small wooded creek. Most of the year there probably isn't much water here, but in the early spring and summer, you actually have to ride in the creek for about 30 feet before climbing out to the top of the mesa again. The trail ends on a dirt road that you can take back to the Colorado River Road 301.

Access Description

The McCoy Trail System is on BLM land west of the small town of McCoy, Colorado. This trail system hardly has any trail signs and has lots of unmarked intersections. There is no service in the area, so it's best to download the maps ahead of time. The system is made up of lots of short trails varying in difficulty from easy to advanced, with lots of rock obstacles and great views of the Colorado River. There is a staging area that is a dirt pull-off on Highway 131 near Trail 8625 that accesses trails on the west and east sides of this highway. There are also some small staging areas and BLM camp spots for small rigs on the Colorado River Road 301 to access the trails from the south. There's some private property in the area that should be respected. This area gets really hot in the summer, so the best times to ride are spring and fall.
