Trail Overview
Shields Gulch enters the Four Mile off-roading area northwest of Buena Vista and is accessed directly from Highway 24, about 15 minutes before town. The road is generally mild, with only two sections that are slightly rocky and rutted, and resembles the typical dirt roads common in this area. Most stock vehicles should be able handle it without issue. Along the route, you'll find numerous dispersed campsites - many with incredible views of the Collegiate Peaks. Even in winter, this road is often accessible since snow tends not to accumulate much in the dry, temperate foothills around Buena Vista. At the terminus of this road, you'll find a trail junction with many other trails that lead deeper into the Four Mile area.
