Trail Overview
FS 138 begins off Trail 574 Brown Springs Rd as a wide two-track route with a staging and parking area near the trailhead. This point-to-point trail gradually climbs into the mountains over a dirt and gravel surface scattered with loose rocks averaging around 6 inches in size. The trail winds through classic central Arizona terrain surrounded by creosote, juniper, and scattered pine trees while steadily gaining elevation. Along the climb, expansive views begin to open up, overlooking the Verde Valley. At a major Y intersection, stay left to remain on FS 138 as the route continues climbing through a series of mountain switchbacks. The ascent provides continuous scenic overlooks and increasingly rugged terrain as the road wraps around the mountainside. High-clearance vehicle recommended with 4WD on steep, loose rock climbs with some areas of washouts. Off-road tires recommended. Pinstriping is minimal on the main FS 138 route, best traveled dry, could become more washed out in the future, as loose surfaces become slick Further up the trail, you will pass an old mine site and historic stone building, marking one of the most notable landmarks along the route. Shortly after this point, FS 138 officially ends and transitions into FS 9602M, which continues the loop and eventually reconnects with FS 9602N to form a large backcountry circle route through the area.
