Trail Overview

This is a well-maintained and graded trail that ascends through a picturesque canyon. However, when reaching the summit, you'll encounter a locked gate, restricting further access to San Pablo Fishing Camp. To proceed to San Pablo, it's essential to contact the fishing COOP in Bahia Tortuga in advance and arrange for the gate to be unlocked. Here you'll find a more primitive road descending into another canyon. For this part of the journey, a 4WD vehicle is necessary as the entire route will be an arroyo. Roughly a quarter-mile down, you'll encounter an open gate, marking the end of the mapped trail and the beginning of uncharted territory. This route was initially mapped with a high clearance 4WD big rig, and while it offered around 2 inches of clearance on each side, it was deemed safer to make it an out-and-back journey. A local from the fishing COOP in Bahia Tortuga confirmed that this route leads either to Bahia Asuncion or San Roque, depending on the direction of recent tracks. Regardless of your destination, be prepared for a primitive route and the possibility of self-recovery. Carry extra supplies to ensure a safe and rewarding adventure.

Difficulty

Up to the open gate, the route is relatively straightforward. However, beyond the gate, it becomes uncertain. It is highly recommended to travel with more than one vehicle and be fully equipped for self-recovery, along with carrying extra supplies. A local source confirmed that the route does continue, as evidenced by a recent set of full-size truck tracks passing through the gate at the time of mapping. For those seeking an exciting and less-explored adventure, this could be an excellent addition to your journey, provided you are well-prepared for a more primitive trail. For the mapped route, 4WD is necessary to ensure a safe return up the sandy arroyo in the canyon. However, once past this section, the route should be passable by any vehicle. Remain vigilant about potential weather conditions when traveling through arroyos.
