Trail Overview

This short but intense off-road route demands careful planning and preparation. While rated for high-clearance 4WD vehicles, only highly modified rigs with experienced drivers should attempt it, as the trail often requires digging, stacking, or cutting to proceed. Side-by-sides, quads, and motorcycles are much better suited for this route. Deep rain ruts, narrow passages, and steep climbs make the trail particularly challenging for even the most capable high-clearance 4WDs. Starting from the east, the trail begins on a decommissioned road now reduced to cow tracks but still discernible. After the first mile, you'll encounter a gate to pass through or bypass, depending on your vehicle. The trail traverses numerous arroyos, with crevices over three feet deep in some areas and sections less than six feet wide, requiring precise straddling of high points. As you progress, the climbs and drops become increasingly demanding, culminating in a final arroyo where the trail temporarily vanishes but is passable. After navigating this section, the last climb is less complex, leading to an easy 2.5-mile drive on a 2WD-friendly trail into Ejido Meliton. Expect to encounter overgrown brush that may require clearing along the way. This route is a true test of skill, preparation, and adaptability.

Difficulty

This trail, while technically navigable by high-clearance 4WD vehicles, is far better suited to dirt bikes, ATVs, and side-by-sides, listed in order of preference. Attempting the route in a side-by-side or Jeep-style vehicle demands expert driving skills, exceptional ground clearance, and significant trail preparation, including digging and rock stacking. The route's deep crevices, narrow passages, and challenging terrain necessitate precise tire placement and careful navigation, as reflected in its difficulty rating. It is important to note that this assessment is based on dry conditions and could change dramatically with weather.
