Trail Overview

This off-road route begins just off Highway 1, with a flat, open campsite located about a quarter-mile in on the right. The trail starts smooth and soft, wide enough to avoid encroaching brush or desert vegetation, as it descends gradually toward the ocean. Along the way, you'll encounter a mix of rocky sections, rain ruts, and substantial sandy stretches. Keep in mind that the sandy terrain you descend will need to be navigated on your return. Once you reach the compact flats behind the sand dunes, the ground is firm when dry--capable of supporting a 15,000-pound vehicle--but can become muddy and unpredictable after high tides or heavy rain. As the trail nears the beach and forks left, the sand deepens significantly, reaching depths of up to 20 inches. Beyond this point, venturing onto the beach demands careful preparation, including the ability to lower tire pressure, carrying proper recovery equipment, and ideally traveling with a second vehicle. Up to this stage, 4WD is unnecessary, but further progress requires it.

Difficulty

This trail is accessible to most high-clearance 2WD vehicles, but caution is advised in a few areas. The hard-packed low-lying section behind the sand dunes can become muddy and challenging after storms or high tides, making conditions unpredictable. Near the trail's end, where it forks left toward the beach, the sand becomes exceptionally deep and soft. Attempting to proceed beyond this point without 4WD, adequate recovery gear and proper preparation is not recommended.
