Trail Overview
Driving out to Rose Spit seems easy; it's a straight line that can usually be done in 2WD, but it can be extremely hazardous if you aren't paying attention. Many vehicles have been washed out to sea over the years by having a breakdown or not paying attention to the tides. It is critical that you go when the tide is receding or fully out, and it is recommended to go with another vehicle and a recovery rope, as there are very few winch points if you were to get stuck. If you do get stuck or have a breakdown, you need to know there is no one who will come and rescue your vehicle, and if it is below the high tide line, it will be buried in the sand and waterlogged in a few hours. The trailhead is located 2km northeast of Agate Beach Campground. Drive to the end of Tow Hill Road. Just past the Hiellen Village Longhouses is the beach access point. Driving on the sand is fairly straightforward; however, watch out for loose patches that will swallow smaller tires. About 5km in, there is a shipwreck you can drive right up to, and it is definitely worth a stop. The distance to the tip of the spit is about 16km. It is a very surreal experience to have the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Hecate Strait on the other. It is a short trip that you can do in an hour or two, and you will remember it for the rest of your life.

Difficulty
The danger comes from the tides, not the terrain. Please use caution as the tide levels will change. 4x4/AWD is recommended, but not required.
