Trail Overview
This route leads to a primitive campground area within Shawnee National Forest overlooking Lake of Egypt. The trail follows a partially maintained gravel road with frequent tree limbs overhanging that may limit access for larger vehicles. Due to tight clearances, this route is best suited for truck bed campers, small vans, Class C vehicles, or overlanding setups. The campground offers a quiet, remote setting with designated sites that include picnic tables and established fire pits. While there is no formal boat ramp, there is one down the road at 871 Hickory Point. Physically capable visitors can carry kayaks or paddle boards down to the water from their campsite. Fishing from the shoreline is also a popular activity. This is not a big rig-friendly area, but it makes an excellent option for a weekend tent camping trip or a simple off-grid getaway. Pack-in/pack-out rules apply, and visitors should plan accordingly. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions, while summer temperatures can be high but manageable for shorter stays.
