Trail Overview

Clipper Gap Canyon Access begins much like many of the other primitive foothill tracks in the region, rocky, lightly traveled, and etched with the scars of desert erosion. Several unexpected washouts appear suddenly along the route; these obstacles, combined with light off-camber sections, require a vigilant eye and careful tire placement. Despite these technical hurdles, the trail becomes a very pleasant drive as you head toward the mountains. The highlight of the route is the sudden appearance of a dramatic canyon that seems to emerge out of the flatlands alongside the trail, offering a striking geological contrast to the surrounding terrain. The landscape is a vibrant mix of high-desert scrub and sagebrush, teeming with life. As you navigate the trail, keep a sharp eye out for the local wild burro population; their presence is evident everywhere, from tracks to well-worn "donkey trails" crisscrossing the area. This trail serves as a vital connector for those who have traveled the lower canyon cutover too far and need a scenic link to the main Clipper Gap trail that climbs deep into the high peaks of the Toiyabe Range. Expect very limited to no cell service in this area. The surrounding hills and canyon walls effectively block signals. Download offline maps before leaving the Austin area.

Difficulty

Rated a 3 due to several unexpected washouts and light off-camber sections. These obstacles can be sudden. While the trail "moves along quite decently," the rocky sections and washouts require more than a standard passenger vehicle.
