Trail Overview

Tarpiscan Road is an 8.2-mile out-and-back trail beginning at its intersection with Brewton Road. The route descends into a canyon before turning east and wrapping around another ridge to intersect with North Fork Road. Turning right at this intersection, Tarpiscan Road continues for an additional 3 miles before ending at a private property border. The trail is a shelf road for the majority of its length, with technical challenges including a tight switchback at 0.25 miles, followed by a tight brushy section. Several miles later, a short but steep descent leads into a mud hole during wet weather. Beyond the intersection with North Fork Road, full-width vehicles should exercise caution, as Tarpiscan Road terminates at a gate with few spots large enough to turn around on the shelf road. This trail is managed by the Washington Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Fish and Wildlife. A Washington State Discover Pass is required for access. Motorized vehicle use is restricted to roads marked with green dots only, as per management regulations. Tarpiscan Road is accessible year-round.

Difficulty

With a tight switchback, steep descent, mud hole, and narrow washout, four-wheel drive with quality tires is recommended. Weather conditions such as rain and snow significantly increase difficulty. Due to the narrow shelf road and limited turnaround opportunities, full-width vehicles should approach the final 3 miles with caution.
