Trail Overview
Ainsley Canyon Road winds through the scenic L.T. Murray Wildlife Area in central Washington, offering an accessible yet rewarding off-road experience. This green-dot road is open seasonally from May through mid-December and is best explored in a high-clearance 4x4 or side-by-side. The drive takes you across rocky gravel and occasional rutted sections, weaving between sagebrush ridges, meadows dotted with wildflowers, and shaded aspen groves. While the road is not highly technical, its single-lane stretches and uneven terrain demand a mindful pace, especially around creek crossings and hillside ruts. Highlights include wide-ranging views of the Cascades, peaceful meadow trails, and the historic stone hut nestled in a quiet, grassy hollow--an ideal spot for a break. The L.T. Murray Wildlife Area spans over 100,000 acres of protected habitat, managed in part to support a migratory elk herd. Historically, this region was part of the seasonal range of the Yakama people, who hunted game and harvested roots in the rolling hills and upland meadows. The area's geology is shaped by ancient basalt flows layered with glacial and alluvial deposits, creating the undulating ridge lines and fertile lowlands visible today. As you travel through Ainsley Canyon, you'll notice the transition from arid shrub-steppe to lush subalpine forests--a reflection of both elevation changes and volcanic soil diversity. Wildlife sightings are common, especially mule deer, raptors, and, in warmer months, the occasional rattlesnake sunning along the trail. Whether you're in search of views, solitude, or a bit of Washington's natural and cultural history, this trail delivers a memorable off-road escape.

Difficulty
Trail difficulty varies by season. In late spring and summer, the roads are generally hard-packed but can be deeply rutted in places, requiring careful tire placement. During fall and early spring, expect muddy conditions and several small water crossings that can change rapidly with weather. In winter, the area is typically covered in deep snow, with slick slopes that make travel challenging or impassable without proper equipment and experience.
