Trail Overview

Forest Road 2342 in Olympic National Forest is a classic Pacific Northwest climb, starting as a narrow gravel road that quickly transitions into a mix of packed dirt, loose rock, and occasional ruts as you gain elevation. The road is generally moderate, with a few steeper, uneven sections that can get slick in wet conditions, but it's approachable for most high-clearance 4WD vehicles. Be on the lookout for fresh rockfall or blown-down trees. As you wind your way uphill through dense evergreen forest, the canopy begins to open up, revealing expansive valley views below and, on clear days, a distant glimpse of Mount Rainier rising above the horizon. The higher you climb, the more scenic pull-offs you'll find, perfect for stopping to take in the layered ridgelines and quiet backcountry feel. This area is ideal for a full day of exploring beyond just the drive. Numerous spur roads branch off for further exploration, some leading to secluded dispersed camping spots tucked among the trees. Nearby trailheads offer access to short hikes and waterfalls, especially during spring and early summer when runoff is strong. Olympic National Forest spans a huge range of landscapes, from lush rainforest valleys to mountain viewpoints, so it's easy to pair this trail with additional adventures in the area.

Difficulty

This is an easy road in most vehicles; be on the lookout for very deep (16") rain runoff ruts across the road. All can be driven around if you pick the correct line.
