Trail Overview

This is the most difficult of several options to reach Flag Pole Knob. The route is generally only one vehicle wide with dense foliage in the warmer months. There are also several rain dependent muddy areas and creek crossings. Numerous 12-18" rock steps going up and down are found along this route. Meadow Knob is located just past the intersection with Dunkle Hollow Trail and has nice views with camping opportunities. The lower section is a basic gravel forestry road.

union springs has degraded steadily each year I've been coming here for 5+ years. the water holes can be 2'+ and the washouts are easily 18-24" in places. a few obstacles have bypasses but the majority do not. there has been a cherokee(kl gen) off the side of the trail broken for a month now. given the popularity of this trail a higher difficulty should be given.

Did both flagpole knob and union springs. Felt that the difficulty was harder than advertised. I had a Bronco with Sasquatch package and it did fine, though a couple spots were close.

Required trail building for a couple of sections- mostly dry, some ice in shaded parts still melting.
