Trail Overview
Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. Box Flat Road serves as an easy and scenic gateway into one of the more remote and less-traveled areas of the San Rafael Swell. This well-maintained dirt and gravel road winds through wide open terrain, offering expansive views of the surrounding mountains and access to a network of more rugged 4x4 trails branching off into the backcountry. The route itself is straightforward, with no major obstacles, making it suitable for most passenger vehicles with decent tires. As you travel farther in, the landscape opens into sprawling meadows with a quiet, isolated feel that sets it apart from more heavily trafficked areas. While there are no established campsites directly along the road, those willing to explore the connecting trails will find more secluded and private camping opportunities. Near the end, the trail forms a loop that gradually turns you back away from the mountains, wrapping up an easy, scenic drive ideal for accessing deeper adventures.
