Trail Overview

House Mountain Road offers a nice drive through the heart of the Texas Hill Country. It connects FM 2323 and State Highway 87 via a scenic stretch of Loyal Valley Road and House Mountain Road. As the route traverses the border between Llano and Mason counties, travelers are treated to awesome views of granite rock formations and classic local topography. This public county road has a well-maintained dirt and gravel surface and is legal for registered vehicles. The road winds through working ranch land, and visitors will cross numerous cattle guards and low water crossings, and may encounter open-range grazing where livestock will have the right of way. While the drive is typically straightforward, the presence of low-water crossings makes the route highly weather-dependent; during periods of heavy rain or regional flooding, these sections can quickly become impassable. It is important to respect the local residents by remaining on the roadway, as the land flanking both sides of the route is strictly private property.
