Trail Overview
Reno Gulch Road winds up from the south end of Hill City and climbs deep into the forested hills, offering a scenic mix of rock cuts, tight curves, and creekside cruising. It's well-maintained for the most part -- wide gravel with solid drainage -- but it still feels rugged thanks to its elevation gain and the way it hugs the gulch. Towering granite walls, old forest growth, and narrow bends give it that classic Black Hills texture. The route links up with multiple spurs and side trails, including access toward Deerfield Lake and other high country loops. Historically, this gulch was part of the mining and timber boom in the late 1800s, and if you keep an eye out, you'll catch remnants of old claims and homestead routes tucked back in the trees. Wildlife is steady -- elk and deer in the upper reaches, with turkeys clucking their way across the road when you least expect it. You'll find some good dispersed camping options near the upper flats and clearings, especially where side roads fan out. It's a strong connector or a worthy out-and-back if you're just looking to soak in forest solitude with a bit of history under the tires. Pack in, pack out, leave no trace, and tread lightly.

Difficulty
While typically unmaintained by the county, it does have large amounts of private property surrounding the trail, and I would suspect it's plowed during the winter. The trail is one lane wide in some spots.
