Heggie Spring Road

Trail Overview

Heggie Spring Road is a mellow, winding little spur tucked deep in the southern Black Hills. It's gravel, easy to navigate, and lined with a mix of ponderosa pine and open glades. The road doesn't go far, but it's a hidden gem if you're just looking to get away from the noise and settle into some quiet forest. A couple of nice dispersed camping pullouts sit near the spring itself, where the ground flattens and the shade is solid. Wildlife is active in this area--expect to see deer, wild turkey, and maybe elk, depending on the time of year. Heggie Spring is also a quiet stopover during the fall hunting season, with game moving through the low ridges and water sources. Geologically, this stretch sits near the edge of the Spearfish Formation, with red shale and gypsum occasionally exposed along cuts and drainages. That softer earth holds moisture a little longer after rains, so it can get slick. It's part of a broader hydrologic area that feeds into Castle Creek to the north. Pack in, pack out, leave no trace, and tread lightly. Ready when you are with the next one.
