Trail Overview
Fruity Pebbles has well earned its name! Featured in the Cereal Bowl, Fruity Pebbles starts off traversing a dried-up creek bed. The beginning of this trail can be deceiving, as you push on, the difficulty will grow, and surpass its original rating of 6/10, with it being a much more suitable 7/10. Body Damage is likely along this trail. Slowly, down the trail, the rocks turn into boulders. Reaching up to grab whatever low-hanging part they can grasp. Eventually, you are spit back up for a brief relief of two-track. However, this is a false hope, as you dive back in, you will begin to learn how this trail earned its name. Section 2 of the dried creek bed is a significant step up in difficulty. There are no legal bypasses or bailouts. You'll be climbing over boulders. You didn't enter this trail to bypass everything; you entered this trail for a challenge. Once you clear the boulders that want to hold your rig back from finishing this trail. You eventually start the lower rock garden. Finally, you get to see how Fruity Pebbles earned its name. With large boulders that can swallow and shred 35-inch tires, they are not only large. Sometimes, they move. Shifting in placement as you crawl your way over them. This trail has seen severe trail braiding, which threatens to close this route. At times, it can be difficult to see the legal route; a keen eye will know. The route that is legal to run is home to the large boulders, looking to come face to face with your differentials and skid plate. There is an upper rock garden; the upper section is an 8-rated section. You will need a Motorized trail permit for this trail. Help us keep the historical sites, the beautiful views, and the trails clean. Pack out what you pack in. Mud Bogging in the Black Hills is illegal. Do not use the trails when they are saturated. Difficulty
Fruity Pebbles is home to a rock garden like no other. These boulders are known to shift and rip tires wide open. This trail offers a different experience from the other trails across the hills. This is due to the large boulder field that users must navigate to progress the trail. Expect Rock Rash on rims, be prepared with tire repair kits and a spare. The signage at the trail head has slowly become slightly outdated, due to the constant evolution of this trail and it's dfficulty.
History
Opened in the 90's, this trail survived the 2010 Motor Vehicle Use map closures. Many rock crawling routes and trails were closed so that the trail system would comply with the new Travel Management plan. Named for the giant boulders that drivers navigate across, Fruity Pebbles is a trail that the local clubs are proud to maintain, and the story of its survival through the trail closures is a good one. Be on the lookout for the elusive "Rock Trout".
