Trail Overview

Payette Trail #970 is accessible during late summer when the Applegate Lake water levels are lower. It is located at the southeast end of the lake off of Forest Road 1075, which takes you to Acorn Womans Lake. The trail starts off as a single wide dirt road with some turnouts to pass. As you get closer to the lake there is a large open area with plenty of room for dispersed camping, however, check local fire restrictions for cooking and campfires before heading out. Once past the open area, the trail narrows down to a single wide road with no turnouts that is about 85 inches wide and lined with Madrone and Pine trees. If you are concerned with getting your vehicle scratched up from the brush and trees, this trail is not recommended. If camping in the area, be sure to secure your food and keep pets on a leash as it is prone to visitations from Mountain Lions and Black Bears. If you bring a fishing pole, the lake offers some great trout and bass fishing. In the late summer this area is subject to thunderstorms, large rainfalls, and fires. Always be prepared and stay safe.
