Trail Overview
This rugged trail accesses Indian Creek at the base of Steens Mountain. There is excellent high-desert camping in the area and very nice, cool creek access through the summer. The trail is rugged and hot in summer but passable from spring to fall. The historical Newton Cabin is near the creek at the end of the trail. It is very rough, and has many large loose rocks, but passable by most high clearance 4x4 vehicles. Summers are hot and harsh, so bring plenty of water. There is little cell phone reception in the area.
Difficulty
Relatively straightforward trail, but very rough with large rocks and ruts.
History
The cabin near the creek is an historical site. Steens Mountain was traditionally used by the Paiute Indians, and eventually for sheep grazing, then cattle. It was turned into a wilderness area in 2000.
