Trail Overview
This 4-mile undulating sand track offers a dynamic North-South traverse through the inland section of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Running parallel to the coast but sheltered by the foredunes, the route connects the Horsefall and Old Bark OHV Staging Areas in the south to the Hauser Sand Camping Access (Sandy Way Road) in the north. Unlike the beach, this unmaintained trail requires drivers to navigate a "sea of sand" marked only by orange diamond markers on white masonite stakes that can be obscured by shifting drifts. The terrain is a mix of open, windswept bowls and tighter, technical sections that weave through a "spiderweb" of unmapped side trails. Along the way, the route passes numerous marked dispersed sand campsites, tucked into the edges of the tree islands for wind protection. The experience is one of total freedom, but it demands constant visual tracking of the next marker pole across the bright, featureless expanse.

Difficulty
While not technically rocky, the Bark OHV Trail presents a consistent challenge due to the deep, soft sand that robs vehicles of momentum. The rating reflects the mandatory requirement to air down tires to 10-15 PSI to create a "caterpillar track" effect for floatation. Drivers must read the terrain to avoid razorbacks (sudden drop-offs) and maintain momentum through the softest "sugar sand" usually found on the lee side of dunes. While a high-clearance 4x4 can manage the route, the constantly shifting surface means self-recovery gear (traction boards, shovel) is essential.
