Trail Overview

Trail 5007 starts on the south end from Upper Rio Penasco Road, starting at a well-marked trailhead. The trail is wide, easy, smooth dirt to start, through open grassy fields between the pine trees. It has several roots and ruts right away, and quickly transitions into a rockier trail as it starts ascending through the forest. There are embedded rock layers, plus lots of baby-sized rocks that ping you around. Most of the rocks are packed down, and the loamy soil has good traction, so it's not too difficult, just a bumpy ride. The trail traverses across the hillside like a shelf, with smoother sections giving relief from the rocks. You'll ride along wide open green grassy meadows where you can see deer and elk, where the trail has deeper off-camber ruts filled in with stick debris and loose rocks that ATVs will have to straddle. There were a few deep ravines running perpendicular to the trail as well that came up suddenly. After gaining 800 feet of elevation in 2 miles, the trail ends at the intersection with 5007C.

Difficulty

This is a moderate trail, mostly due to several significant ruts, often 2-3 feet deep and off-camber, that ATVs will have to straddle and navigate. Additionally, there is frequent loose rock that makes for a slower, more technical ride.
